Blood Droplets Sim for Forensics

Crime scene investigators use the shape of blood droplets to understand details of how crimes were committed. I created a series of simple 3D animations that depict some of the basic mechanisms that determine the droplet shape.

After discussions with Dr Shanan Tobe, I created a simple simulation to illustrate how a blood droplet leaves an elliptical shape when it lands on a surface. In forensic investigations, the ellipse is used to estimate the trajectory of the droplet and may be important in understanding what happened at a crime scene. (A more detailed write-up of blood droplet dynamics.)

I heard from Shane that he’s still using my videos in his teaching It’s great to know that they’re being put to good use. These videos are free to use as long as you credit me beside the video, as in; “Animation by Dr Greg Ruthenbeck”.
